Welcome to Natural and Attachment Parents of Richmond, a place of support, education, and friendship for parents who practice natural living and attachment parenting. Attachment parenting, or AP, is a philosophy based on nurturing parenting practices that create strong emotional bonds, known as secure attachment, between infants and parents. This style of parenting encourages responsiveness to the child's emotional needs and develops trust that emotional needs will be met. By fulfilling a child's need for trust, empathy, and affection, AP provides a foundation for healthy relationships to last a lifetime. AP practices help to reduce or prevent child abuse, behavioral disorders, crime, and other serious social problems.

Before requesting membership, please familiarize yourself with attachment parenting (a summary of the eight principles of attachment parenting is here: http://www.attachmentparenting.org/principles/principles.php) and consider whether these principles accurately describe your own parenting philosophy. We are very protective of NAP as a safe haven for AP parents and we will not tolerate debate over these basic beliefs.

Natural living and attachment parenting encompass different kinds of families and beliefs, but commonly, parents practice or support extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping, cloth diapering, homeschooling, babywearing, natural childbirth, responsible consumer practices, and healthy living choices, and many do not practice circumcision, vaccination, sleep training such as the "cry it out" method, or any sort of physical punishment such as spanking. We encourage respectful discussion of parenting topics, but we will not tolerate defense of physical discipline, criticism of breastfeeding, or promotion of sleep training.
